An illegal immigrant, Victor Martinez Hernandez, was indicted this week for the brutal rape and murder of Rachel Morin in Maryland. Martinez Hernandez, a 23-year-old El Salvador native with suspected gang ties, was arrested in Tulsa, Oklahoma, after a nationwide manhunt. He had fled his home country in February 2023 following a warrant for the murder of a woman there. Martinez Hernandez made several unsuccessful attempts to enter the United States before successfully crossing the border near El Paso, Texas, on February 13, 2023.
Authorities revealed that Martinez Hernandez committed a home invasion in Los Angeles in March, where he allegedly assaulted a 9-year-old girl and her mother. He then targeted Rachel Morin on the Ma & Pa Heritage Trail in Bel Air, Maryland, on August 5. Martinez Hernandez dragged her off the trail, brutally assaulted her, and strangled her to death. Her body, covered in bruises, was found in a drainage tunnel.
Rachel Morin’s mother, Patty Morin, shared the agony of imagining her daughter’s final moments, knowing she was facing death and leaving behind her children. Martinez Hernandez is currently held without bond and is scheduled to appear in Harford County District Court on July 22. His court-appointed attorney, Marcus Jenkins, has not responded to requests for comment.
