WEST LONG BRANCH – Monmouth University announced the retirement of the university’s president Paul R. Brown on Tuesday.
Brown, who became the 84-year-old school’s eighth president in 2013, will begin a sabbatical in March, which will be followed by his retirement.

Former Monmouth University Vice President and General Counsel Grey J. Dimenna has been tapped to serve as interim president during the search for Brown’s successor.
“I didn’t come to the decision to retire lightly, and after many discussions I knew the time was right,” Brown said in a release. “Monmouth is positioned for a great future and I am confident that the University is in good hands with Grey at the helm.”
Henry Mercer, the chairman of Monmouth University’s Board of Trustees, said the university made great strides during Brown’s tenure.
“The reputation of the university continues to grow, with the Polling Institute and the Urban Coast Institute gaining national recognition. Nevertheless, our primary mission is the enhancement of the educational experience of students,” Mercer said in a statement. “Under President Brown, the University’s strategic plan furthered this effort by enhancing academic programs, expanding facilities, and placing a priority on the preparation for life after Monmouth. The athletics programs also have seen national success.”
Dimenna retired as the university’s vice president and general counsel in July 2015.
“Paul touched many lives during his tenure,” Dimenna said in a statement. “The entire Monmouth University community wishes Paul an engaged and rewarding retirement.”
The university said Brown plans on spending his sabbatical exploring how melding the liberal arts and business disciplines can better prepares students as they pursue careers.
