Starting this week, the rules for electric scooters change. All personal mobility vehicles (VMP) sold in Spain will need a certificate that guarantees compliance with the technical requirements required by national and international regulations and which are established by the General Directorate of Traffic (DGT).
The regulations establish that all scooters that are marketed from January 22, 2024 must have a marking, a plate, indicating the vehicle’s approval number, the name of the establishment in which it was purchased and the scooter features.
Among the characteristics that must be met, have a speed indicator and a braking system with two independent brakes. But they are not the only ones. They will not be able to travel at more than 25 km/h, a speed at which the engine will stop propelling the vehicle and they will have an anti-handling system.
They must also have a visible speed and battery level information indicator. In addition, they must have two independent brakes and those with more than two wheels, as well as a parking brake.
Finally, they must be equipped with front reflectors (white), on both sides (white or auto yellow) and rear (red). The brake light must be differentiated or combined with the rear light.
This will be required for electric scooters sold starting this week. For those already acquired, the DGT contemplates a moratorium until 2027. During that time, users will have to adapt their vehicles to the requirements approved by the executive.
