The ten largest Spanish cities collected 360 million euros for traffic fines in 2022. More than half of this amount corresponds to Madrid, where 199.3 million euros were paid for different offenses of this type, according to a report prepared by Dvuelta , a legal services company specializing in the management of traffic sanction resources.

The study highlights that in the 10 main Spanish cities, where 5.89 million vehicles circulate and that congregate a population of 9.24 million inhabitants, the collection for traffic fines in 2022 was only 21% lower than that received in 2021 by the General Directorate of Traffic (DGT), which raised some 440 million euros.

Below, based on the data collected by Dvuelta, we present the ranking of the municipalities that collected the most money from citizens in fines during the past year.

“The figures speak for themselves. Madrid more than triples that collected by Barcelona, with half the population. But it is that Barcelona, in turn, triples the number of the third city in the ranking, Seville”, highlights the Dvuelta report .

It also warns that both in Palma de Mallorca and in Bilbao the “very high” collection figures in relation to their population “call attention”.

In terms of income per inhabitant generated by traffic offences, although Madrid once again leads the ranking with an average of 60.8 euros per person, Palma de Mallorca is in second position (50.2 euros) ahead of Barcelona (38 euros), Bilbao (37.4 euros), Seville (32.3 euros), Malaga (20.9 euros), Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (18.8 euros), Zaragoza (17.8 euros), Murcia (11.9 euros) and Valencia (10.1 euros).

“The magnitude of collection per inhabitant of Palma de Mallorca is striking, a city that, in the end, is revealed to be one of the most severe when it comes to collecting traffic fines, due to its policy of proliferation of speed control radars. speed in wide areas and with a lot of visibility but with a very low specific limit that does not always seem justified”, indicate the authors of the study.

Calculations made by the company Dvuelta indicate that, last year, Madrid collected an average of 101.2 euros per vehicle in fines, while in Bilbao, which occupies the second position in this classification, the average amount was 69, 4 euro. Barcelona is third on this list, with 68.9 euros.

In fourth position was Palma de Mallorca, with 60.9 euros in fines per vehicle in 2022, followed by Seville (49.3 euros), Zaragoza (33), Málaga (30.9), Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (27 ), Murcia (16.4) and Valencia (16.2).
