In winter, road conditions can become unpredictable. In cold areas, where temperatures do not usually exceed 7 degrees or where it snows frequently, the most advisable and safest thing is to fit winter tires in the car. These tires are specifically designed to offer better performance in winter conditions, making them an effective answer for driving on slippery surfaces covered in snow or ice.

However, if we choose to use conventional tires all year round, it is essential to have a set of snow chains accessible in the trunk. Not only will they help us be cautious in extreme situations, but in certain scenarios their use is mandatory. Failure to be equipped with chains entails a fine of up to 200 euros, in addition to the impossibility of continuing the march.

There are several types of snow chains, each adapted to different conditions and driver preferences. Metal chains are widely recognized and used as a reliable solution to improve traction on slippery asphalt. Although they are the most popular, they are not the only options available since the market offers various alternatives.

Next, we review the different types of snow chains that we can equip our car with special emphasis on the advantages and disadvantages that each of them offer.

These chains, known for their interlocking steel links, are the traditional chains that equip most cars. As its name indicates, these are several chains, transversal or rhombus, that are linked and wrap the wheel. These chains usually include one or two manual tensioners to keep the chain attached to the tire.

Textile chains, also known as sealskin, cover the tire tread and generally offer good value for money. When driving, these chains stand out for their smoothness, allowing their use in conjunction with systems such as ABS and ESP.

Similar to the previous ones, these chains are made up of a network of plastic cables covered in textile material that favors grip in delicate conditions. Like fabric chains, they are compatible with the use of stability control.

Also known as Spikes Spider chains, this type of accessory has a dual structure, with a fixed part permanently installed on the tire and another mobile part that is mounted or dismantled depending on the asphalt conditions.

They are one of the least known, but they are very easy to put on. These chains are made up of independent pieces that are attached to the wheel using straps that are tied across the rim. Therefore, if the wheels have hubcaps they cannot be installed. The independent pieces are made up of a TPU plate with small nails to adhere to the snow.

Although they are commonly known by that name, they actually refer to a spray that is applied to the tread of the tire to increase grip in specific situations. Its main function is to provide a temporary solution for unforeseen situations.
