March was a particularly positive month for vehicle registrations. The market for passenger cars and SUVs experienced an increase of 66.1% compared to the same month in 2022, which means that 99,524 units were put into circulation on Spanish roads. This is the third positive month this year, which represents an increase of 44.5% compared to the first quarter of last year, with 237,564 vehicles registered between January and March.

This improvement, points out the employers’ association Anfac, is mainly due to the improvement in the logistics chain and an increase in vehicle production. Likewise, during March the brands released a bag of accumulated orders that increased the volume of sales.

By type of enrollment, all sectors experience improvements in March. The sales of units dedicated to rental are especially noteworthy. The high tourist season is approaching and companies dedicated to ‘rent-a-car’ have chosen to renew their fleets. They have grown 269.4%, with 24,807 sales. Vehicle registrations for companies have also increased by 44.8%, with 38,656 units sold. Private operations, for their part, also grew by 36%, to 36,061 registrations in March.

Despite these positive figures, registrations continue to be below pre-pandemic levels, specifically, 19% in March compared to the same month in 2019.

Registrations of electrified vehicles (100% electric and plug-in hybrids) increased by 35.1% in the first quarter, reaching 31,290 units, according to data published this Monday by the Business Association for Development and Promotion of Electric Mobility (Aedive) and the National Association of Vehicle Sellers (Ganvam).

March was a month to keep in mind. Sales of these electrified vehicles increased by 70.4% in March, with a total of 11,690 registered units.

Regarding registrations of zero and low emission vehicles (electrified, hybrid and gas), they grew by 73.1% in the month, with 42,815 units sold. Unlike previous months, sales of alternative vehicles rank as the second purchase option, behind gasoline, with a market share of 36.82% during March.

In total, 11.1% of passenger car registrations registered up to March corresponded to electrified models, a share even lower than that of other European countries.
