Why is the outbreak so bad in Italy? And how likely is it that you become infected with the coronavirus in Denmark?

Professor from roskilde university Lone Simonsen, research pandemics, correspond here, at the læserspørgsmål from Ekstra livedækning of coronaviruses.

Lone Simonsen corresponds If you are vaccinated against influeanza and yet, have been sick, are you somehow more resistant to the corona virus?

Influenza is a whole different virus family, so there are no chances of cross-immunity. But if you have just had a second disease, you have a certain amount of protection because of the same general (inate) immune system, it helps maybe a little.

How long it typically takes before coronavirussen disappear by themselves after a person has been infected with it?

Typically lasts an average of 5-6 days from being infected to even get symptoms. Then it probably takes a week for the immune system to overcome the infection, and then you are immune.

It happens to the vast majority of infected persons.

One hears about more and more infected, there are also some who have been infected and have been healthy?

Yes, the vast majority (80 % or more), as being infected with coronavirus, is sick in a week’s time and come out so completely. It is quite common for epidemic diseases, thus seeing a growing proportion of the population that is immune.

How high is the probability to get COVID-19?

At the moment, the risk is low in Denmark. But over the next 4 months leading up to summer, it is estimated that 10-15 percent of the Danish population will become infected – and the vast majority are mildly ill and recover. If it is an actual epidemic, then it will probably be back next winter in a new wave.

What is it that makes Italy so special mht virus? Is it just because there are a lot of people gathered in one place?

It is a really good question. In addition to that there are many travelers from other countries, so that is one of the reasons that we have to look at Italy, enough that they have tested more than other countries.

For example, tested the first well-known case, a younger man with severe respiratory disease, but without a travel history. He was probably not been tested in many other countries, as in Denmark.

After he was discovered, and begin to test broader in Italy and finds many cases, and rejsetilfælde as the danes returned from the north of Italy. Because countries have a different idea about who should be tested, it can be difficult to compare their number of known cases.

we Have in Denmark a better/different immune system than in other countries? We could potentially react differently to the virus than in other nations? Evs. might be carrying the virus without showing symptoms? How can it be that you are not testing everyone who comes to the doctor with flu symptoms?

Many questions at once – I try to respond to it all!

Denmark reacts enough as other countries in our category – better pga. good health, and perhaps worse because we have a larger elderly segment. There are already many, which is transmitted with milder symptoms, but not typical, that rubs off, if you do not have symptoms. Not all are tested, because the symptoms are so common (fever, cough) that you then should test the lot.
