Ferrari’s activity does not stop. After the dazzling presentation of the Purosangue in the Trentino-Alto Adige region, in northern Italy, now comes the Roma Spider, the uncovered version of the coupé presented in 2020.
This time Ferrari chose Morocco, the El Badi Palace in Marrakech, to show the new Roma Spider for the first time. The new Prancing Horse car exudes an undeniable timeless elegance and reinterprets in a contemporary key the Italian style of the 1950s and 1960s, a time distinguished by the refinement of sports models and the joy of living.
Under the direction of Flavio Manzoni, from the Centro Stile Ferrari, the Roma Spider is inspired by convertibles such as the 365 GTS4, the famous Daytona of 1969. It is a 2 2 spider that incorporates a refined fabric top, designed to enhance the proportions of the car, without altering its flowing body line.
To redesign the roof, which is steeply sloped at the rear, Ferrari had to rethink the geometry of the rear window. Thus, in the Roma Spider, it is integrated into the structure of the hood itself.
Manzoni’s team has interpreted it as a body-color dashboard that crosses the area at the base of the rear window, dividing it into two sections. The lower section thus becomes an active carbon fiber spoiler, whose geometry virtually connects to the rear window and completes the roof design. When the roof is retracted, the active spoiler is optically connected to the geometry of the roof and head restraints.
In addition, the top can be folded or unfolded electrically at a speed of up to 60 km/h, in just 13.5 seconds. And so that turbulence is not a problem while driving the car, there is a wind deflector that can be deployed via a button located between the seats.
They explain in Ferrari that one of their priorities has been the soundproofing of the passenger compartment, as if it were a closed-structure car. For this, a special five-layer fabric has been chosen for the hood. And the roof is collected in the form of a Z, occupying 220 mm of height in the trunk, a really small space.
In addition, this special tailoring fabric can be customized in various colors and with contrasting seams. In total, and in combination with the body colors, it offers four two-tone options.
Of course, to travel with luggage it will be better to do it with the hood deployed to take advantage of the 255-liter boot capacity of the Roma Spider.
Like the coupe model from which it starts, the Ferrari Roma Spider has four homologated seats inside. It also has the same dimensions: 4.66 meters long, 1.97 meters wide and 1.30 meters high. The volume of the trunk – 255 liters – is somewhat less than the closed body version. And it has gained 84 kg, going from 1,472 kg to 1,556 kg, due to the sophisticated mechanism of the retractable fabric roof.
However, the rear seats, as is often the case in this type of sports car, are narrow and impractical for traveling. They serve, yes, for an occasional transfer of short duration or for children.
The Roma Spider’s engine is part of the prestigious V8 biturbo family, which has won the “International Engine of the Year” award for four consecutive years. It has 3,855 cubic centimeters, 8 cylinders in V and a power of 620 CV at 7,500 rpm. It is equipped with special software (Variable Boost Management) developed by Ferrari to vary the torque depending on the gear used. As the gears go up, the available torque increases.
Gearing up is the superb DCT F1 eight-speed, first used on the SF90 Stradale. It also incorporates the latest generation of Ferrari Side Slip Control (SSC) control software.
And the benefits, in a certainly light car, are very high: 320 km/h top speed and only 3.4 seconds to reach 100 km/h. Likewise, it takes 9.7 seconds to reach 200 km/h. Formidable.
Inside it has two screens: the instrumentation screen and the 8.4-inch multimedia center, in a vertically inclined arrangement, as is the central tunnel. Optionally, a third screen can be added for the passenger seat. And it combines fabrics such as leather or Alcantara and haptic-type controls.
Without an official price yet in Spain, there is talk of about 295,000 euros. And, again, there is already a long list of interested clients. Sure, it’s a Ferrari.
