The new Mercedes-Benz G 580 with EQ technology fully delves into the tradition of the model series created in 1979 with a version that symbolizes like no other the fusion of tradition and progress. Like the conventionally powered versions, the first 100% electric variant of the star’s iconic brand off-roader is based on a ladder chassis concept, a selectable Low Range reduction system, independent front suspension and a rigid axle at the front. rear.

But unlike versions with a combustion engine, the new electric G is powered by four individually controlled motors located near the wheels. They are integrated into the chassis and each develop 147 HP with a maximum total combined power of 587 HP (432 kW) and a maximum torque of 1,164 Nm. Translated into performance, it can accelerate from a standstill to 100 km/h in a minimum of 4.7 seconds and its maximum speed is 180 km/h.

This particular propulsion configuration allows it to offer virtual locking of the differential through torque vectoring as well as functions only available in this variant that – in addition to being surprising and spectacular – increase its off-road efficiency, such as G-Turn, G-Steering and the intelligent off-road crawl function. The 116 kWh high-voltage lithium-ion battery integrated into the chassis ensures a low center of gravity and enables a range of up to 473 kilometers according to WLTP.

To protect it from the intrusion of water and dirt, it is housed in a torsion-resistant casing and has a specific underbody protection made from an intelligent mix of materials, including carbon, to protect it from impacts, whose thickness exceeds 25 mm and has a weight close to 60 kilos.

Among the features common to its siblings equipped with thermal blocks, the new Mercedes-Benz G 580 with EQ technology presents an inclination of up to 100% on suitable surfaces and remains stable on lateral slopes of up to 35 degrees. But in relation to the maximum fording depth, the smoke-free variant manages to increase the figure to 850 millimeters, exceeding its conventionally powered counterparts by 150 millimeters.

And when it comes to exclusive functions, the most surprising is the G-Turn. It allows you to make two complete turns on itself in the desired direction on loose or unpaved surfaces, which can be useful when driving off-road on a narrow road and an obstacle makes it impossible to continue forward. The four independently driven wheels rotate in opposite directions (those on the right side compared to those on the left).

The G-Steering function offers a significantly smaller turning radius. This is achieved by selectively controlling the torque on each of the drive wheels, causing the vehicle to rotate around the inside rear wheel. In this way, the result is similar to that of “pulling the handbrake” to “introduce” the rear into tight curves or other tight spaces. This function is active up to a speed of 25 km/h.

Finally, the three-speed off-road crawl function ensures ideal propulsion even on loose surfaces, maintaining a preset speed, thus functioning as a kind of cruise control for off-road driving. This allows drivers to fully concentrate on the optimal line and obstacles without having to simultaneously balance the brake and accelerator. However, it can always be overridden with the brake or accelerator pedal.

Another feature of the 0 emissions G is the G-Roar “artificial” sound system, which provides a unique sound experience to the new electric variant. The distinctive driving sound is inspired by the emotive V8 sounds of the model family. It provides a very well achieved acoustic accompaniment to acceleration. Unlike other electrics that generate a monotonous increasing “hiss”, its deep bass and sonorous tones differentiate and distinguish it.

The driver can influence the sound by choosing the driving program. While in “Confort”, for example, it is rather restrained, in “Sport” it develops a powerful and emotional sound. G-Roar also includes an “aura” that can be heard around the vehicle and a variety of “event” sounds when closing the door or starting and stopping the engine.

The brand has not yet communicated the official price for our country of the electric version of the G, which as a reference in Germany is sold from 142,621.50 euros for the normal version and from 192,524.15 euros for the special launch edition called Edition One.
