Kia continues with its plans to electrify its entire range of cars. The Korean manufacturer explained at the beginning of the year that it planned to launch 15 new electric models by 2027. And that in 2030 they want to become the number one brand in the world in electrified vehicles.
A certainly ambitious goal that is achieved by announcing new models and confirming the planned plans. And this is just what Kia just did at its EV (Electric Vehicle) Day in Korea. In this way, Kia has presented three new electric models, the EV5, and the EV3 and EV4 prototypes. Automobiles, all of them with 0 emissions, that will join the EV6 and the newcomer EV9.
And the objective of the Asian firm is to achieve annual sales of one million electric vehicles by 2026 and, in 2030, reach 1.6 million units per year. Kia’s strategy is to offer models with prices between 28,500 and 76,000 euros, as is the case with the already presented EV6 and EV9.
But the challenge, the announced plans, include the launch of smaller electric vehicles, such as the EV3, EV4 and EV5 models, with prices between 33,000 and 48,000 euros with the intention of accelerating – and popularizing – the incorporation of the vehicles. electric in the different markets.
The EV6’s little brother, the EV5, will arrive in 2024. This new 100% electric compact SUV will be sold first in China, and then arrive in Europe.
Developed on Hyundai Motor Group’s e-GMP platform, the new EV5 is equipped with Kia’s most advanced technology in connectivity, automation and electric propulsion systems.
The “United Opposites” design language is the starting point of a philosophy marked by straight, vertical and horizontal lines. And it stands out for its front headlights and plastic protections.
The use of recycled materials is another of the main keys to the finishes of the EV5. The cabin concept is in line with the EV6, as well as the recently presented EV9. A dual-screen system allows you to enjoy a digital, permanently connected driving position.
The EV5 range will be structured in different trim levels and engines. The use of the e-GMP architecture makes it possible to configure rear-wheel drive versions with a single motor and all-wheel drive versions with two motors, one on each axle.
Kia announces that the standard version, equipped with a 64 kWh battery, will have an approved range of 530 km. And the long-range model, with an 88 kWh battery, is expected to have a range of 720 km per charge.
The long-range AWD (all-wheel drive) version will have an 88 kWh battery and a combined power of 230 kW, with a 160 kW motor in the front wheels and a 70 kW motor in the rear wheels. With this AWD version, the range planned by Kia reaches 650 km.
In addition, the EV5 will offer fast charging technology: in 27 minutes it can go from 30 to 80% of its battery capacity.
On the other hand, the EV5 battery has been designed to work effectively in all four seasons of the year, even in extreme hot and cold conditions. An advanced heat pump system, already used in the EV6, has been incorporated into the EV5 to manage battery temperature.
Likewise, it will offer a regenerative braking system and the i-Pedal device that allows the driver to brake and accelerate using a single pedal, which minimizes fatigue and increases driving comfort.
To make trips in the EV5 a true pleasure, Kia has created a bright and very well-connected space for the driver and passengers. Thus, the cabin is equipped with the Connected Car Navigation Cockpit infotainment system and supports online software updates.
The extended Panoramic Wide Display screen consists of a 12.3-inch screen for the instrumentation, a 12.3-inch screen for the infotainment system and a 5-inch screen for the climate control.
This configuration provides the driver with complete information and content for a functional and engaging driving experience.
Kia has not announced the price of the new EV5 for the Spanish market, but it could be around 45,000 euros (without aid) in the most affordable version.
