The new Toyota Hilux Hybrid 48V introduces electrification for the first time to the range of the legendary Japanese pick-up to offer greater efficiency, superior driving performance and superior overall comfort.
Since its launch in Japan in 1968, the Hilux pick-up has garnered unanimous recognition for its quality, durability and reliability, becoming one of the most emblematic Toyota products worldwide. Currently, it is produced in six different countries and sold in more than 180 markets and regions around the world, with more than 21 million units sold globally.
Throughout more than half a century of excellence, the Hilux has proven its invincible character. It is, at the same time, a load machine for work but also a dual-use vehicle, which can perform both in daily use and for driving on the most adverse terrain in the world, where it is in its true element.
Not in vain, the Toyota Hilux has conquered places as extreme as the North Pole, Icelandic volcanoes and Antarctica. In recent years he has also made his mark in the world of motorsport, winning three victories in the demanding Dakar Rally, in 2019, 2022 and 2023, in addition to winning the FIA ??World Rally-Raid Championship twice.
Now, with the addition of a 48V hybrid system, Toyota reinforces its inclusive multi-technology strategy towards carbon neutrality, offering a variety of affordable and practical options, also for commercial and off-road vehicles.
With the usual and emblematic image of the Hilux, and available exclusively in double cab format, the Hybrid 48V variant offers the characteristic forceful and bold impression of this tough pick-up thanks to its three-dimensional grille and bumpers, underlining the firm and resistant presence of the model. Inside, the extensive equipment list has been improved with the inclusion of a modern infotainment system – with wireless connectivity through Apple CarPlay and Android Auto – and the latest Toyota Safety Sense technology.
The Hilux’s powerful 2.8-litre diesel engine – generating 204 hp at 3,400 rpm and 500 Nm of torque – has been strengthened with the addition of a 48V hybrid system specifically designed for the unique demands of this pick-up. The technology it implements is based on the following principle: the motor propels a compact generator motor through a belt system, which in turn charges the new 48V lithium battery; small enough to fit under the rear seats and thus minimize the impact on cabin space, weighing just 7.6 kg. This 48V battery also powers the vehicle’s 12V system via a new DC/DC converter.
As with Toyota’s combined hybrid electric systems, the new battery charges during deceleration, as well as regenerating braking energy that would otherwise be lost, while boosting brake performance and durability. Once charged, the battery sends up to 16 HP (equivalent to 12 kW) of power and 65 Nm of torque through the generator motor to the combustion engine, to optimize acceleration, power and efficiency.
Thanks to this combination, the new Hilux Hybrid 48V provides great acceleration response, improved braking performance and more efficient fuel consumption with a smoother ride whether on the road or on rougher terrain.
In urban environments, the additional power of the hybrid system results in more linear acceleration, especially when starting off, while regenerative braking results in deceleration that is more efficient and natural. Another effect of the improvements to the Stop system
The Hilux also implements the new Multi-Terrain Select system for the first time to deliver even better performance and control, giving the driver the ability to adjust the vehicle’s stability control settings based on specific driving conditions. Thus, you can establish an automatic setting or choose from five predefined options – Dirt, Sand, Mud, Snow or Stones –, calibrated to regulate power and wheel slip to maximize traction and maneuverability.
