Madrid ZBE, the low emissions zone that covers the entire city of Madrid, launches a new restriction this January 1: passenger cars with environmental classification A not registered in the city, which in 2023 could no longer circulate on the M-30 or enter the central almond of the city, they will no longer be able to directly access the municipal area of ??the capital.

This January 1 also begins a six-month notice period – until June 30 – by which all those owners of passenger cars who violate the new regulations, and who are caught on camera, will receive an informative letter in the that the prohibition of access to the city will be warned so that this practice is corrected. However, the offender may be punished if he is detained by a law enforcement agent.

Madrid ZBE comes into force outside the M-30 as of January 1, 2024, and, in accordance with the provisions of article 242 of the Sustainable Mobility Ordinance (OMS), a notice period is established that , on this occasion, will extend until June 30.

Access not permitted to Madrid ZBE, as with the Low Emission Zones of Special Protection Central District and Plaza Elíptica, represented until March 20, 2022 a minor traffic violation in accordance with the provisions of articles 18 and 75. c) and could be fined 90 euros (45 euros if it is for prompt payment), in accordance with articles 80.1 and 81 of the Law on Traffic, Circulation of Motor Vehicles and Road Safety.

Due to the modification of the aforementioned law by the central government, since March 21, 2022, it has been sanctioned as a serious traffic violation, carrying with it a fine of 200 euros (100 euros if it is for prompt payment).

The City Council hopes that in the six months of notice the improper entry into Madrid will be corrected

The Madrid City Council’s forecast is that with the new Madrid ZBE restriction, the number of vehicles that will be sanctioned additionally per day in the notice period will rise to 2,700, that is, 700 more per day. However, it is expected that there will be a correction of behavior during the six months in the warning phase of 50%, as has occurred with the other ZBEs.
