Electric bikes are here to stay. Every day more cyclists delighted with them are seen and heard, whether for recreational or work use, which explains the delights and comforts of this type of vehicle.

And yes, the truth is that eBikes have brought this sport closer to many people, and have considerably increased the age range of users. This attraction has made practically all brands dare the challenge of designing their models, with their geometries and traditional components, but also with their electrical assistance particularities.

A few days ago we gave you some tips for buying your first bike. Today we explain the basic and most differential concepts of bicycles

Electric bicycles have a motor that facilitates the progress of the cyclist. This power unit is only activated while pedaling, never independently. In addition, the help, with a maximum of 250 watts, is neutralized from 25 km/h, so it is very useful on climbs and flat sections, but not on descents.

Some components, such as the drivetrain, are the same as on conventional bicycles. On the other hand, others, such as chain, brakes and tires, tend to be more resistant, since the weight and power produced are higher.

It is in charge of producing help during pedaling. One of the most important parameters is the engine torque, which tells us the power it can generate from a standstill. This value kicks in, for example, when starting up a steep climb. It is calculated in Newtons/meter (Nm), and the standards are usually between 55 and 85. The higher, the more pushing force. They are increasingly incorporating more technologies such as Shimano’s EP801, which allows automatic development changes, making driving easier.

Battery power is measured in watt hours (Wh). The higher the number, the more storage capacity. Right now, most eBikes come equipped with batteries between 400 and 750.

One of the issues that generates more doubts is its duration. For that there is no clear answer, since it depends a lot on the type of terrain, the level of assistance and other external factors, such as temperature.

You also have to take into account if it is removable or not. Being able to separate the storage unit can be more convenient when charging, but it can also be less aesthetically attractive.

We can say that it is the command to control the power unit. From this device, which is normally located on the handlebars, you can raise and lower the assistance level, find out the battery storage status or find out the speed. A small control center that is intuitive and easy to use.

Now is the time to dare. Some stores and brands offer the chance to test bikes of this type. Surely, once you know the sensation, you will not hesitate to get one!
