“In love, everything is possible”. That’s what Xavi Morató, responsible behind the play El Poliamor és ássi (complicated) thinks, which opens this Tuesday at the Aquitània Teatre in Barcelona by the company Generació de Merda and which will be on the bill until next November 13
“This is the first musical comedy that deals with this philosophy of life,” advances the playwright, who has fused satire and traditional humor to talk not only about polyamorous relationships but also other topics such as the hypocrisy of social networks, the commodification of bodies or personal dissatisfaction, which he considers, “the backbone of this story with which many may feel identified”.
And it is that, as Morató advances to La Vanguardia, “it is not necessary to believe in polyamory or participate in an open relationship to understand each and every one of the situations that the protagonists of the work will experience” and explains that, among others things, “what we have proposed is to treat common fears from the perspective of humor. For example, loneliness. The panic of being alone makes us settle for less than we would like. We hold on to what we have. We find it hard to run away from relationships even if they are broken. We have an atrocious panic about what will happen next and we are looking for solutions and putting patches.
And one of those patches, in Morató’s opinion, sometimes ends up being to open the relationship. “Go ahead, it seems perfect to me that everyone does what they want with their personal life. A relationship involving several people can be perfectly healthy if everything is talked about well. What happens is that this does not always happen and, then, yes, it can end badly. Especially, if it has not emerged as something natural but as a way to try to save an initial relationship.
In this sense, Morató reflects that “an open relationship has the same problems as a normal relationship, but it is also open. This means that, as more people participate, everything must be justified more and better to avoid misunderstandings. Each person carries their backpack with problems and it is important to manage it well so that it does not explode or so that jealousy does not arise within the same relationship. It’s hard? I think it’s not easy but it’s not impossible either and there are many people who practice it and demonstrate it”.
The hand and ear of the composer Gerard Sesé, responsible for the songs, all of them unpublished and that can be heard through Spotify and, also, purchased in physical format, have also been essential in the work. “The idea is that they can be heard regardless of whether the work is seen or not. Since this project began to take shape in 2016, it was always proposed that it be a musical. That made it possible to deal with many aspects, apparently serious, but very easy to caricature. The idea was to put music to these contradictions of life”.
