World War II Navy Veteran Dies at 102 While Traveling to D-Day Event in France
Robert Persichitti, a World War II Navy veteran who witnessed the raising of the U.S. flag at Iwo Jima, passed away at the age of 102 while en route to France to participate in an event commemorating D-Day, a veterans organization confirmed.
Mr. Persichitti, a resident of Fairport, N.Y., was part of the dwindling number of World War II veterans attending D-Day celebrations. He was traveling with a group associated with the National World War II Museum and a companion named Al DeCarlo when he suffered a medical emergency aboard a ship heading towards Normandy for the 80th anniversary of D-Day.
Despite his history of heart problems, Mr. Persichitti was determined to make the journey. His unexpected passing was peaceful, surrounded by his companions and listening to his favorite singer, Frank Sinatra.
During his service, Mr. Persichitti served as a radioman second class on the U.S.S. Eldorado, participating in operations in Iwo Jima, Okinawa, and Guam. He was recognized for his contributions by being named to the New York State Senate’s Veterans Hall of Fame in 2020.
Reflecting on his experiences, Mr. Persichitti shared stories with students even after his retirement from teaching, emphasizing the importance of remembering the sacrifices made during World War II. His legacy as a dedicated educator and war veteran will continue to inspire future generations.
