The mayor of Badalona (Barcelonès Nord), Xavier Garcia Albiol, has stated that “with the start of the construction works of the new Gorg canal railway viaduct, Badalona takes a definitive step towards its transformation, due to the impact that this work will have. “urbanistically and in the structuring of the city.” Garcia Albiol recalled that this is the most important civil work that has been carried out in the last twenty years in Badalona and that the people of Badalona have had to wait many years to see its start. “Now, the canal works are an unstoppable reality that will transform the Gorg neighborhood and the image of the city of Badalona, ??which will be the most attractive city in the metropolitan area,” he stated.
This project is the great work of transformation of Badalona since the new promenade around the canal and the canal itself will become a new centrality for the city. In addition, the work will significantly improve the connection of the northern neighborhoods of Badalona with the seafront, through the Rambla del Gorg and the promenade next to the canal. Another positive effect from an urban planning point of view will be the improvement of the connection between the port, the seafront, La Mora and the Gorg with the rest of the city. The works also include the construction of a new roundabout that will connect Ponent and Eduard Maristany streets, as well as an 8-meter-wide underpass for pedestrians and emergency vehicles on Tortosa street.
The works for the construction of the new railway viaduct of the Gorg canal have begun in recent weeks, with detailed topography work, which is necessarily carried out at night, during the hours in which there is no train movement on the tracks. of the train. In parallel, work has also begun on the perimeter closure of the work area, the review of the state of the embankment that was conditioned last summer and on which the provisional detour of the railway track must be built while the canal viaduct is being built. The next step, which is already being worked on, is the preparation of the facilities (offices, changing rooms, warehouse) for the construction workers and for this the land has already been cleared.
It should be remembered that all the construction work of the viaduct will be carried out without interrupting the railway service of the coast line. For this reason, the first phase of the works will consist of carrying out the detour for rail traffic. Once this variant has been built, which is scheduled to be completed in November, the construction of the viaduct itself will be carried out, which will be able to be in service with the definitive railway lines at the end of 2025.
The viaduct over the Gorg canal will be 180 meters long and will consist of 5 openings. It will be located between the streets of Ponent and Tortosa and will allow the train to cross over the canal, a navigable watercourse 32 meters wide and 325 meters long that connects with the port. The works have a budget of 15.4 million euros, of which Marina Badalona contributes 10.5 million; Badalona City Council 4.9 million. This agreement also incorporates the investment by ADIF of 3.3 million in improvements to the railway infrastructure between Sant Adrià del Besòs and Badalona.
