Winter has officially begun in Catalonia this Friday, December 22, with a sky covered in lenticular wind clouds, which have been seen in different colors depending on the time and place, between white and red, as these photographs show. Photos from La Vanguardia Readers.

Lenticular clouds are called that because they are shaped like a lentil, as their name indicates, or there are also those who see them as a saucer or converging lens.

They are stationary and form mainly at high altitudes in mountainous areas and isolated from other clouds. Among mountaineers these clouds are considered a harbinger of a storm.

This is what the sky looked like early in the morning in Torelló, in the Osona region. The reddish color of the lenticular clouds is due to the glare.

As part of the phenomenon of dispersion of sunlight, in the morning and afternoon hours, when the sun is closer to the horizon, the light that reaches the Earth is soft tones between red and orange.

This morning, spectacular lenticulars at dawn on Gavà beach, in Baix Llobregat.

Today we have lenticular wind clouds over the Canigó and also over the Empúries Sea. These clouds always leave us speechless and give us exciting moments of contemplation, like something supernatural.

First sunrise of the winter sun with some thin and lenticular clouds from the Riuet beach in Sant Martí d’Empúries, in L’Escala, in the Alt Empordà.

I have portrayed the first dawn of winter with spectacular wind clouds. May this season that we begin bring us snow and water. The church we see is the Puig-agut sanctuary, in Manlleu, Osona.
