Weslaco High School Celebrates Historic Softball State Championship Win

WESLACO, Texas – The Weslaco High School softball team made history by becoming the first Rio Grande Valley team to win a UIL state championship. The lady Panthers secured the title in a dramatic fashion, with a thrilling comeback victory against Waco Midway in the 6A State Championship game.

The game seemed out of reach for Weslaco as they were trailing 9-3 entering the bottom of the seventh inning. However, the Lady Panthers staged an incredible comeback, cutting the deficit to 9-7. The moment of glory came when sophomore Andrea Ortiz stepped up to the plate with the bases loaded and hit a grand slam, securing an 11-9 walk-off win for Weslaco.

The victory sparked jubilation among the team members, with sophomore Clarissa Mejia accurately predicting Ortiz’s game-winning hit. The team’s hard work and dedication throughout the season paid off in a historic moment that left even the head coach, Mario Rodriguez, in awe.

The win not only brought joy to the Weslaco community but also showcased the talent and resilience of Valley softball teams. Senior first baseman Elizabeth Craig expressed her pride in representing the Valley on a state level and making the community proud.

The celebration of this historic victory will continue with a pep rally in honor of the lady Panthers, highlighting their remarkable journey to the state championship. Weslaco’s triumph, alongside Harlingen South’s appearance in the state title game, marks a significant milestone for Valley softball, setting the stage for more success in the future.
