California Highway Patrol officers were left shocked by the extraordinary discovery made inside a speeding Rolls-Royce Ghost in Madera County on Monday night. Driver Arrested for DUI and Possession of Exotic Animal
The driver of the Rolls-Royce Ghost, identified as Ali Mused Adel Mohamed, was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence, possession of an exotic animal, and possession of cannabis for sale. The possession of primates as pets is illegal in California, and experts emphasize the dangers of owning a baby spider monkey, which requires specialized care and constant supervision to thrive.
Monkey Finds Sanctuary at Oakland Zoo
The 1-month-old spider monkey was taken into custody by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife and transported to the Oakland Zoo for sanctuary and care. The zoo, known for its expertise in caring for confiscated exotic animals, including African lions, tigers, gibbons, and more, ensures that these animals receive proper attention and nutrition.
Illegal Exotic Pet Care
Amy Toler, director of Madera County Animal Services, provided temporary care for the spider monkey, now affectionately named Marcel, while awaiting the arrival of wildlife officials. The monkey was kept warm, fed mashed bananas, and given water, highlighting the challenges of caring for illegal exotic pets. Marcel’s story sheds light on the illegal pet trade and the importance of responsible ownership and conservation efforts to protect endangered species like spider monkeys.
