A 24-year-old man has been banned from football stadiums for three years after sending racially insulting messages to Brentford player Ivan Toney on social media.
The culprit, Antonio Neill, sent these messages to Toney on October 14, 2022 and these were shared by the footballer himself to denounce the situation that many players have to face on a daily basis on social networks.
Neill pleaded guilty in Newcastle court and has received this three-year sentence, in addition to a four-month jail term that is suspended if he does not reoffend within the next two years. Brentford and Northumberland Police have described this sentence as “a landmark in the law”.
For several years, the Premier League, together with the rest of the English football entities, has been trying to reduce the abuse that footballers receive on social networks, for which they have contacted the different platforms to persecute the abusers .
