Three organ donors at the Arnau de Vilanova University Hospital (HUAV) in Lleida in a period of just ten days have allowed a total of 14 transplants to be carried out on people who required it due to their respective diseases. Thanks to the donation, made in the middle of last July, corneas and other tissues have also been obtained that have improved the quality of life of patients.

The transplant coordinator of the Lleida hospital, Mariona Badia, has stated that this “solidarity and generous” act, added to the efforts of professionals from different health facilities, administrations and means of transport, has given a second chance to 14 patients who “only they could cure their illness with a transplant.”

For Badia, situations like this show the capacity for planning, management and teamwork of all the professionals involved in the organ donation and transplantation process.

According to the latest data from the Catalan Transplant Organization (OCATT), in 2022 a total of 1,346 transplants were performed in the whole of Catalonia, most of them kidney, and 15,929 tissues distributed by the Banc de Sant y de Teixits were counted. With regard to families, 82% gave their consent to organ donation from their family member. In Lleida, the Arnau de Vilanova University Hospital had 15 donors throughout the past year.

“News like this can only happen thanks to the commitment of people. That is why it is key that within each family we are able to address the issue of donation, expressing our will to family members to facilitate, in this way, the decision to donate in particularly difficult times”, said Badia.
