The president of the United States, Joe Biden, plans to announce tonight that the American army will build a temporary port in Gaza to deliver humanitarian aid to this besieged enclave where hunger has begun to claim its first victims.

Biden plans to announce it in the Nation’s debate speech, a relevant moment in the legislature. The decision reveals the concern that exists in the environment of the current tenant of the White House about the effect that the Gaza war may have on the progressive, young and Muslim vote in the upcoming November elections.

Negotiations for a ceasefire in Gaza are stalled despite the US Administration’s attempts to force Israel and Hamas to reach an agreement to alleviate the disastrous humanitarian situation in the strip.

Hours before the speech, White House officials leaked to the press what would perhaps be their most significant announcement. Biden will order the armed forces to build a floating port off the coast of Gaza that will allow humanitarian aid to reach the inhabitants of the strip. Characterized as an “emergency mission,” the construction of the dock will involve hundreds of thousands of soldiers – who will not be able to set foot in Gaza – and numerous ships, as well as the participation of other countries, presumably European. According to Commission President Ursula von der Leyen’s spokesperson, the EU is working on a possible humanitarian corridor from Cyprus, the coast closest to Gaza.
