This Easter Monday in Catalonia it has been possible to see a spectacular pillar of sun at dawn from Gavà, in Baix Llobregat, as can be seen in the Photos of the Readers of La Vanguardia.

A light pillar is an atmospheric optical phenomenon in which a vertical beam of light appears to extend above and/or below a light source.

In this case, we see in the image how the pillar of sunlight rises vertically above the sun, but also below.

The effect is created by the reflection of light from small ice crystals that are suspended in the atmosphere or comprise high-altitude clouds (for example, cirrostratus or cirrus clouds).

If the light comes from the sun (generally when it is close to or even below the horizon), the phenomenon is called a solar pillar, as in this case of the photo taken from Gavà.
