I have captured these photographs for Las Fotos de los Lectores de La Vanguardia of the Riera Major river as it passes through Viladrau, in the region of Osona, although it belongs administratively to the province of Girona.

As you can see, the flow has recovered with the recent rains, with the stairs that we see in the last photo next to the lock for the fish that need to go up the river.

The Riera Major originates in Montseny, in the municipality of Viladrau, crosses Les Guilleries by Sant Sadurní d’Osormort and Vilanova de Sau, where it flows downstream of the Sau reservoir.

The terrain is sandy, so the water looks transparent. The images capture the effect of water rushing down the Riera Major river after the recent rains.

One of the curiosities of the Riera Major as it passes through Sant Sadurní d’Osormort is that you can see a fish ladder. It is a type of transfer system, a channel with artificially increased roughness, which communicates the level of the reservoir upstream of the dam with the level of the river downstream of it. The shape of the ladder must allow fish migrating in the river to cross the dam. It has an eminently ecological function.
