The agent who was injured in the act of duty in the event in Andújar (Jaén) that occurred on June 11 and in which another agent and a neighbor died, armed with a hammer and a knife, has already received a medical discharge from the Neurotraumatological Hospital.
This has been confirmed by the spokesperson for the National Police Corps (CNP) in Jaén, Anabel Cabrera, who has stressed that the investigation into what happened is still open. The working hypothesis is that at the moment the assailant attacked the agent who has now been discharged, he fell to the ground and during his fall the assailant was shot and the same bullet hit the deceased agent , a 40-year-old policeman and resident of Marmolejo (Jaén).
The agent who was discharged had a stab wound to the back and blows to the head caused by a hammer.
According to the same sources, the trajectory of that bullet that later hit the agent, causing his death, remains to be determined. In this same sense, the sub-delegate of the Government of Spain in Jaén, Catalina Madueño, has stated that she “is waiting for the final reports” from the Scientific Police.
Madueño has stressed that the “most plausible hypothesis” is that the first shot “injures the assailant and that bullet, once it has passed through the assailant’s body, finally lodges in the body of the National Police agent who is deceased.”
Likewise, it has indicated that the assailant received two more shots as he was leaving the place, “one of which did not hit his body because it bounced off a purse with a coin that was deformed from the impact and the other received it in the leg , which are non-vital places”.
“It was an episode with very bad luck, because it is indeed difficult, if it were not for the fact that the evidence is there and because everything corroborates it, but it really is a situation of bad luck,” Madueño said in statements to journalists.
The incident occurred around 10:00 a.m. this Sunday, when a fight was reported between two neighbors on Las Monjas de Andújar street, where one of them was hammering the door of another in an aggressive attitude.
At first it was reported that Juan José, the deceased 40-year-old agent, had been wounded with a knife in the struggle with this neighbor, although the subsequent investigation confirms that the reason was that he was shot when he was trying to help his partner, who is recovering from his injuries after receiving a hammer blow to the head and several stab wounds.
The attacker, who was brandishing a knife and a hammer, was hit by three bullets, according to sources consulted by Europa Press. First he was shot during the struggle on the ground -which is the bullet that later impacts the other agent, dying- and, later, when he was fleeing on foot, two more shots in non-vital areas, specifically in the buttock and knee.
The images recorded by the neighbors show that a first agent, the co-pilot of the patrol car, got out of the official vehicle and the attacker quickly went towards him. The policeman reacted by drawing his weapon, without firing at first while he walked backwards to later grab his extendable baton.
The assailant pounced on him and knocked him to the ground, at which point a first shot can be heard. While the assailant and policeman struggle on the ground, a second agent – the driver – approached on foot and was shot. It is the latter who presented a cardiorespiratory arrest and, despite the resuscitation maneuvers and his transfer to a hospital, he died shortly after.
The General Directorate of Police, under the Ministry of the Interior, awarded this Monday the Gold Medal posthumously to the policeman who died in Andújar. The agent has also received the Marmolejo Gold Medal.
The National Police also announced that, as a sign of mourning, the Spanish flag will fly at half mast in all its dependencies of this institution until 8:00 p.m. this June. The Marmolejo City Council also declared three days of mourning for the death in the act of duty of the policeman who was a natural and resident of the municipality.
