The source of the Queiles River, in the municipality of Vozmediano, is the origin of a popular saying: “Traitor Moncayo who makes Castile poor and Aragon rich.”

In this place there is an underground transfer from the Duero River to the Ebro, estimated at 634 l/s. The division of the basins of both rivers draws a circle around the Moncayo that surrounds it and leaves it within that of the Duero. In that circle is where the Araviana River is born, which, if this transfer of underground water to the Ebro basin did not occur, “would make Castilla rich.” Hence this popular phrase in this area.

As detailed by the City Hall of Vozmediano, because of this, “the water of the Araviana River empties at the source of the Queiles River in Vozmediano and from there it goes to stop at Aragon where it finally empties into the Ebro near Tudela (Navarre)”.

This source is the most important in the province of Soria and is located southwest of the urban center of Vozmediano, at about 1000 meters of altitude.

It constantly flows “in a spectacular, explosive, noisy way, gushing through a cave.” For all this, a beautiful landscape is formed in its surroundings, with a path that leaves from the center of the hamlet and from which you can see the castle, also portrayed in this series of photographs in La Vanguardia’s Readers’ Photos.
