It is a must visit in Caldes de Montbui, in the Vallès Oriental, to see the wonderful 12th century polychrome Romanesque carving of the Holy Majesty, which we can see in Las Fotos de los Lectores de La Vanguardia.
Of course, we must pay special attention to the head of this Majesty Christ that is venerated in the parish church of Santa Maria. And it is that, although it is considered a true Romanesque masterpiece, due to its quality and beauty, it must be said that only the head is original.
The Holy Majesty from medieval times was destroyed on July 21, 1936 during the Spanish civil war. But, miraculously, the head was saved and, based on it and the numerous preserved images, the rest of the body could be faithfully reproduced, a work carried out by the Barcelona sculptor Josep Rius.
Legend has spread among the population of Caldes de Montbui that the image was brought by a Bohemian tribe that used it as a bridge to cross streams and torrents. This group settled in Caldes with the image. And, when they decided to leave the town, it turned out that the Christ increased his weight, so they decided to leave the Holy Majesty in Caldes.
The coming of tribes from Eastern Europe to Catalonia during the 15th century is documented, but no document has been found on their relationship with the Holy Majesty (the first documented reference to the image is from the 17th century). Of course, this Holy Majesty presents characteristics of Byzantine art.
