The until now mayor of Vilobí d’Onyar, Joan Pagès, has died “unexpectedly”, as confirmed this Tuesday by the city council, while expressions of condolences from colleagues from his political party, JxCat, continue.

The council has issued a statement “out of absolute dismay” in which it highlights “the honesty, human quality and sensitivity” of Pagès, who took office in this year’s elections.

“Joan, you have left us in an unexpected way, a very painful departure that has caught us all off guard, but you leave us an immense legacy that will always make you present. Dear mayor, may the earth be light to you. Rest in peace,” add the text.

The Vilobí d’Onyar town council has declared three days of mourning, has suspended official events and flags are flying at half-mast.

The JxCat formation, from its profile on social networks in the province of Girona, has expressed its condolences “to the family, friends and neighbors in these very sad moments.”

Party colleagues such as the president of the Parliament, Anna Erra, have also expressed their support for the family, friends and neighbors of Josep Pagès, whom they described as an “affable person.”

Other examples of consternation have corresponded to Erra’s predecessor in office, Laura Borràs, as well as to the general secretary of JxCat, Jordi Turull, or to the former councilor and current member of the government team of Girona city council, Gemma Geis.

The former Catalan president Carles Puigdemont has replicated his party’s message on networks.

For his part, the president of the Generalitat has published a message of condolences on X (formerly Twitter).
