On January 1 I was able to visit the living nativity scene next to the Castell – Palau de Bellcaire d’Empordà. As you can see in one of the photographs in this report in La Vanguardia’s Readers’ Photos, the food market had a wide variety of foods.

This nativity scene was born as a tribute to Esteve Albert i Corp, an author closely linked to this town for being the creator of the show Flag of Catalonia and also a pioneer of all living nativity scenes in Catalonia since he created the one in Escaldes, in Andorra, in 1955. .

Flag of Catalonia is a theatrical show based on the medieval history of Bellcaire and its surroundings. It recalls key events in the history of Catalonia during the 12th to 14th centuries, such as the conquest of the island of Mallorca or the expansion of the Catalan-Aragonese crown throughout the Mediterranean.

It dates back to 1979 and is the work of Esteve Albert, who knew how to encourage an entire town to carry out a project that involves more than a hundred actors, residents of Bellcaire.

In this way, year after year the Plaza de los Condes de Empúries relives the events of that time, explained by the residents of Bellcaire d’Empordà.
