The popular jury has unanimously declared Raúl Díaz, Romina Celeste’s husband, guilty of murder for ending the life of the young Paraguayan woman on December 31, 2018 on the island of Lanzarote.

This verdict will have to be ratified by the sentence that will be dictated by the magistrate of the Second Section of the Provincial Court, which will condemn R.D. of the crimes of homicide, habitual mistreatment, injuries, desecration of a corpse and simulation of a crime.

All parties, including the defense, have adhered to the prosecutor’s request for a penalty of 15 years, nine months and four days in prison, in addition to the payment of a fine of 1,080 euros and the payment of 300,000 euros for civil liability. .

The defendant has apologized to the victim’s family, his own and society, “although he does not deserve it” and has said he “deeply” regrets what he did. This is how he expressed himself this Tuesday when exercising his right to the last word in the third session of the trial for the murder of Romina, after having admitted the facts for the first time in four years on the first day.

“I deeply regret what happened. I apologize to the family, even if I don’t deserve it, I beg Romina’s family, mine and society. I will accept the sentence imposed on me by this court and I will voluntarily enter prison”, said briefly the confessed author, who also thanked the jury for their participation in the process.

In this last session, the parties read their final conclusions and the public prosecution, exercised by the lawyer of the Canary Islands Institute of Equality (ICI), Pino de la Nuez, withdrew her request for the crime of murder and adhered to the reports of the Prosecutor’s Office, the private prosecution and the defense, who chose to request a crime of homicide.

Thus, prosecutor Jesús Lomba asked the jury to sentence Díaz Cachón to 15 years and 9 months in prison: 12 years and six months for consummated homicide, one year and nine months for habitual mistreatment, six months for assault at the Gran Hotel Arrecife, 9 months for the assault at the home the days before Romina’s death, as well as three months for desecration of a corpse, in addition to a fine of six euros a day for six months for feigning a crime.
