The popular jury has unanimously declared that the man tried for the triple crime in Ciutat Vella in January 2020 is guilty of the three deaths, and has not appreciated any hint of mental disturbance or involvement by drug addiction. The man was also found guilty of three robberies, two attempted robberies and injuries. He faces 92 years in prison for two murders and the murder of Barcelona City Council journalist David Caminada. The jury does not consider that the defendant was affected by any mental illness or drug intake that prevented him from evaluating his actions.

Around 3 in the afternoon of January 20, 2020, the defendant assaulted the first victim at his home, on Portal Nou street, in El Born, with numerous blows, and caused 254 wounds with a stab weapon, not located, all over her body and tied a plastic bag around her neck. Immediately afterwards, he burned the house, setting fire to one of the bedrooms and the dining room, and left with the keys to the apartment and a motorcycle, and took some jewelry. To flee he climbed down from the balconies to the street.

Once on the street, he toured the Born and approached a neighbor who was in a doorway. He hit her continuously and squeezed her neck hard. Due to head trauma and suffocation, the woman died. The man took the wallet, the mobile phone, the glasses, the watch and the keys. Shortly after, he stole a motorcycle, assaulting the delivery man.

Shortly after, he abandoned the motorcycle and went into a espadrille shop near Plaza Sant Jaume with a large knife. He demanded the money, but the owners resisted and the man fled towards Plaça Sant Jaume. Shortly before 4 in the afternoon, he approached a Barcelona City Council worker, journalist David Caminada, who was carrying a bag. The assailant wanted to take him by showing him an unlocated bladed weapon. Faced with the victim’s resistance, he struck her twice in the chest, which caused her death in the hospital two days later. A Caminada comrade went to help him and the assailant cut his hand before being reduced by a group of police officers.

For all these reasons, the prosecutor’s office asks him for 92 years in prison for two murders, one homicide with abuse of superiority, one crime of arson, three robberies with violence, threats and less serious injuries. The prosecutor’s office also claims compensation for a value of more than 1.7 million euros for the relatives of the deceased. For her part, the defense attorney continued to request acquittal, but introduced two possible alternatives with full defense or the mitigating circumstance of drug addiction and psychological disturbance.
