The performance of Mercedes González as general director of the Civil Guard will be seen and not seen. The most fleeting, probably, in the 179-year history of the body. Just over two months after taking office at the head of the armed institute, on April 4, González will now step down in order to be able to join the PSOE electoral candidacy for Madrid for the general elections on July 23, in the which is expected to occupy number ten on the list for the Congress that will be headed by Pedro Sánchez.

The Council of Ministers next Tuesday will approve his dismissal, and the appointment of his replacement at the head of the Civil Guard, as confirmed by government sources to La Vanguardia.

A socialist councilor in the Madrid City Council since 2015, Mercedes González (Madrid, 1975) was appointed Government delegate in Madrid in 2021, the year in which she also took the reins of the new PSOE group in the capital. She seemed called to be the socialist candidate to challenge the popular José Luis Martínez-Almeida for mayor in the last local elections of 28-M, although it was finally the former minister Reyes Maroto who held the position.

But González’s career took a surprising turn once again after being appointed, at the end of last March, to replace María Gámez as general director of the Civil Guard, after her precipitous resignation due to the accusation of her husband in one of the Open cases on fraudulent ERE in Andalusia.

The electoral law indicates as ineligible as candidates, among others, the general directors of ministerial departments. Mercedes González will thus leave the Civil Guard to opt for a seat in the Congress of Deputies after the imminent general elections.
