Legends say that the men and women who live on the coast of the RÃÂa de Cedeira were originally children of whales and fish.
Surrounded by cliffs 600 meters high, the small Cedeira estuary forms a sea of ​​barnacles, with a salty taste, whose most spectacular beach is Vilarrube, shaped like a crescent moon.
Actually, the Cedeira estuary is the smallest in the province of La Coruña and one of the smallest in all of Galicia.
In Las Fotos de los Lectores de La Vanguardia we enter the town of Cedeira, whose name comes from the Latin cetaria or cetarea, but there are doubts about its meaning.
For some, it could refer to “ponds or fish nurseries”, but another theory considers that “cetarea” refers to “every huge animal that lives in the water, large marine fish”, alluding to the fact that it is a coastal town where the sighting of cetaceans, such as dolphins, is not uncommon.
In this area, a mountainous group stands out, the A Capelada mountain range, which divides the municipalities of Cedeira, Cariño and Ortigueira. At the highest point, are the VixÃÂa de Herbeira cliffs, considered one of the highest in continental Europe, since they reach 615 meters above sea level.
On the edge of the cliff is the Herbeira sentry box, a stone construction from the 18th century, although the current one dates from 1805, which was used as a maritime surveillance post.
