The Gavà Asparagus Fair has already started, in Baix Llobregat. I was able to capture for Las Fotos de los Lectores de La Vanguardia this beautiful image of the friends of Cal Delaida digging up the white gold of the town, the white asparagus (spárrago blanco).

With a good bundle of asparagus on one side, we see in the photograph the white gold sprouting from the earth that so many visitors come to see and enjoy gastronomically this weekend in Gavà. A timeless tradition.

Gavà celebrates Asparagus Season from April 25 to May 5, the Asparagus Fair on May 3, 4 and 5, and the Agricultural Show is open on May 4 and 5.

According to the City Council, the first edition of what we know today as the Fira d’Espàrrecs was held on May 22, 1932 and was born as an Asparagus Exhibition Competition where farmers wanted to show a native product that is only grown in the fields. located in “les Sorres” of Gavà.

The Fair has adapted to new times and the new needs of both its farmers and visitors. Thus, the economic transformation that Gavà has experienced is reflected in the fairgrounds, made up of Plaza de Jaume Balmes, Carrer de Sant Pere, Carrer de Martí l’Humà and the Jacme March pavilion, which hosts the Agricultural Show.

Thus, in addition to preserving its agricultural spirit, an identifying element of this exhibition with the artistic baskets, with products from the countryside and the lots of asparagus, the Fair has been incorporating other sectors such as commercial and catering.

Thus, in GastroGavà, the Fira’s gastronomic space, local restaurateurs offer their culinary offerings that include asparagus as an ingredient.
