In the heart of the Pyrenees of Lleida, between the municipalities of Alt Àneu, Naut Aran, Barruera and Espot, is the national park of Aïguestortes and Estany de Sant Maurici, the second largest in the State after Doñana.
The area has some of the highest peaks in Catalonia, distributed between two almost parallel mountain systems that extend from east to west, configuring the basins of the Sant Nicolau rivers in the west, where Aigüestortes is located, and the Escrita river. to the east, where the Sant Maurici lake is located. Both mountain ranges are crossed from north to south by another, the Serra de Crabes, which draws a dividing line between the two areas that give the park its name. Its majestic modeling is of glacial origin, and offers one of the most impressive landscapes in the Pyrenees.
The correct signaling of the paths and the large number of itineraries that crisscross the park cheekily invite you to walk through its valleys dotted with lakes and rivers. There are two classic accesses: Aigüestortes to the west, through the town of Boí, and Estany de Sant Maurici to the east, through Espot. Both populations have information centers, through which it is essential to go to get up to date on the most basic issues, such as accessibility, weather forecast or biodiversity of the park.
