Job creation stagnated in November with 155 fewer Social Security affiliates on average than in October. It is a worse figure than the 61,768 jobs created in November of last year but better than that registered in the four years prior to the pandemic. On the other hand, the figures were better in the unemployment records, where there was a decrease of 33,512 people at the gates of the Christmas campaign.
The Ministry of Inclusion has highlighted today that if the effects on hiring derived from the calendar effect are not taken into account, in seasonally adjusted terms the affiliation grew by 78,695 people in November, reaching a total of 20,319,146 employed. Recorded in this way, the Spanish economy accumulates 19 consecutive months of increased employment.
Regarding the number of unemployed, the Ministry of Labor has highlighted that the aforementioned drop in unemployment by 33,512 people in November leaves the total number at 2,881,380, the lowest figure in a month of November since 2007. Some unions such as USO -who did not sign the labor reform- have been defending for months that a part of the drop in unemployment is due to the growth of discontinuous permanent employees who, despite not working, do not count as unemployed as they have a current contract.
The ministry headed by Yolanda Díaz, has indicated that “this is the second largest drop this month in the last decade, only surpassed by that of the year 2021 marked by the pandemic, and it is a particularly significant drop taking into account the adverse economic situation on the international stage”.
In annual terms, the affiliation figures are better both if the number of average workers is taken into account and in seasonally adjusted terms. The forecast of the Ministry of Inclusion, taking the data for the month of November, is that “employment growth is anticipated for the whole of 2022 close to 4%.”
In Catalonia, the affiliation data was better than in Spain as a whole. In November there were 519 more members, up to 3.6 million. On the other hand, and unlike what happened in Spain, the unemployment data have been bad since the number of unemployed in the month has increased by 986 after the reduction in October. In total there are 348,982 unemployed in the community.
In Spain as a whole, by economic sector, registered unemployment fell in services, with 25,083 fewer people; agriculture, 4,507 fewer; industry, a decrease of 3,783, and in construction, with a drop of 1,924. By sex, female unemployment decreased by 19,199 women to 1,727,559, the lowest figure in a month of November since 2008; while in the case of men, the decline was from 14,313 to 1,153,821.
Unemployment among young people under 25 years of age also fell by 4,182. By region, registered unemployment in November fell in eight Autonomous Communities. In absolute terms, the most pronounced falls were registered in the Valencian Community (15,330), Andalusia (11,169) and Madrid (7,757).
