Electric scooters have caused 28 accidents and 2 run overs between January and April 2023 in the city of Girona, according to the Girona Municipal Police. These figures have been increasing in recent years, as well as its consumption. In 2020, this type of vehicle was involved in 27 accidents, but without any hit-and-run. In 2021, the number of accidents grew to 33 and 2 were run over. And, in 2022 the accident rate reached 77 cases and there were 5 hit-and-runs.
In order to curb this increase in accidents, the Girona Municipal Police has launched a campaign to recall the traffic ordinance. In these controls, the agents will remember that the Personal Mobility Vehicles (VMP) can only circulate on bike lanes and on the roadway where pedestrians have priority and in the direction of traffic. In addition, in no case can you exceed 20 km/h and only one person can travel on the vehicle. In addition, the use of a helmet is recommended.
During the campaign, informative brochures will also be distributed with some of the most outstanding items of the regulations and they will be distributed in municipal public facilities. After the informative controls, the agents will begin to carry out specific controls to report those who violate municipal traffic regulations.
