Four years after being signed by Pablo Casado, as the great political figure who placed the PP in a central position in political life, Adolfo Suárez Illana, ends his political adventure, leaving his responsibilities both in the PP, where he directs his “Harmony and Liberty” Foundation, and in Congress, where he holds a secretary’s position at La Mesa.
Adolfo Suárez Illana leaves politics, for the second time, to dedicate himself to law, after having communicated it to the president of the PP, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, so that he can proceed to the relief of his positions, and thanking him for the way in which he has treated him in these months of presidency of the PP, and in the way in which he has carried out the transition from the crisis that ended the presidency of Pablo casado, until now, when he considers it over.
In a letter made public, Adolfo Suárez Illana, son of the first former president of the Government after Franco’s death, stresses that these four years in which he has been in active politics “have been very difficult for our party; marked by electoral processes of all kinds, almost permanently and with different results”, but stresses that in all this time “I have tried to give the best of myself at the service of my country, through the Popular Party”.
Suárez Illana considers that it has been “a privilege” to lay the foundations of “what will undoubtedly be a magnificent tool in favor of understanding between different people: the Concordia y Libertad Foundation”, and highlights his role in the Congress Table, as secretary, “in two very controversial legislatures, from the institutional point of view”, in which he has tried, he says, “to serve in that government body with all the diligence of which I have been capable”, the position that most He has liked to play for his love of law and institutions.
But still, he considers himself a legal professional, not “a career politician”, and therefore considers that the decision he made at key moments was the right one and he took it “in coherence with what was preached”, but the Times change and “today, thanks to God, to the efforts of many and to the good management of President Feijóo -he says-, my party has overcome, with very notable success, the last crisis and is, finally, in a situation that augurs victory in the next elections”. That is why he considers that it is time to resume his professional and family obligations that, “at the time, I understood I had to park temporarily.”
But Suárez Illana makes it clear that his abandonment of active politics does not mean abandoning politics or the PP. In his letter, the son of Adolfo Suárez assures that he will always be willing to continue helping, “from the place where I find myself, to promote Harmony among the Spaniards, without renouncing my personal and political convictions, which includes continue supporting the Popular Party, to write, together, the best possible pages of our common history”.
Adolfo Suárez Illana had his first foray into the PP when, in the time of José María Aznar, and still while his father was still alive, in 2003, he was designated the PP candidate for the presidency of Castilla-La Mancha, in an attempt to stand up to the PSOE in one of its fiefdoms in which the popular had not managed to be an alternative at any time, and Suárez Illana did not succeed either. Shortly after the setback he suffered at the polls, he left politics, to which he had arrived through the front door and having been part of the leadership from the moment he joined.
He did not return to active politics until Pablo Casado recovered him in 2018 as soon as he became president of the PP, as an example of the continuity of the PP in the wake of the UCD, and seeking to place the PP in the political center. As in 2003, Suárez Illana entered through the front door and within a few months he was Casado’s number two on the list for Madrid, and after losing the elections he was part of the Congress Table, a position in which he has continued until now.
