Seat will produce the Tavascan, its new electric SUV, in China

Seat has confirmed this Friday that it will manufacture the Cupra Tavascan, its new 100% electric SUV, in Anhui (China), as reported by La Vanguardia last October. Its production did not fit with the plant that the company has in Martorell, so it will be produced at the Volkswagen factory in the Asian region.

“It was the plant with the adequate capacity and technology at the time of planning production,” say Seat sources. The forecast is that the Tavascan will reach the market in 2024, advancing in the electrification of the brand by 2030. Seat plans to sell in the markets in which it already operates, so all production will be exported.

The decision corroborates that most of the new models will not be manufactured at the Martorell plant, because the platforms to share with other models of the group are abroad. A savings strategy that will be increasingly intense with the advance of the electric car. “By grouping product families in multi-brand factories around the world, the Volkswagen Group is making the most of its synergies and potential,” it says.

Currently, Cupra has four models. Two of them – the Formentor and the Cupra León – are manufactured in Martorell. Then there are the Born, which is made in Germany, and the Cupra Ateca, with production in the Czech Republic. And of the three that are scheduled to be launched between 2024 and 2025, only the small Urban Rebel will be done in Martorell. The Terramar will be made at Audi’s plant in Hungary. The Tavascan, as it has been known today, in China. “For years, and even more so with the electric vehicle, the group’s factories have opted for the award of platforms in which different models will be manufactured for different brands, not for the allocation of models only,” Seat sources explained last October. .
