Sydney Satchell, a former student at Howard University, is gearing up for the 2024 Paris Paralympics where she will be competing in sitting volleyball as a part of Team USA. Her journey to this point has been filled with challenges and triumphs.
Satchell’s dream was always to compete in the Olympics, initially aiming to become the first Black woman on the U.S. lacrosse team during her college years. However, a car accident shortly after graduating from Howard presented her with a life-altering decision. She had to choose between enduring painful dead tissue removal surgeries or undergoing an amputation. Ultimately, she decided to amputate her leg, a choice she does not regret.
Despite never having played volleyball before her accident, Satchell discovered a passion for the sport while watching it at Howard University. In 2019, she joined the U.S. national team and has been dedicated to honing her skills ever since. When asked if she would choose to have her leg back if given the chance, Satchell expressed that she would not, as the challenges she faced have given her a newfound appreciation for life.
In 2022, Sydney achieved a team bronze at the world championships, a significant accomplishment on her journey. While she narrowly missed out on the opportunity to compete in the 2022 Tokyo Paralympics, she views this setback as a source of strength and motivation moving forward. Her unwavering faith and determination have been instrumental in propelling her towards her goals.
Looking ahead to the 2024 Paris Paralympics, Sydney Satchell is filled with excitement and a sense of purpose. She sees her participation in the games as an opportunity to represent not only herself but also her faith, family, country, and all those who have supported her along the way. With her eyes wide open and a heart full of gratitude, she is ready to take on the world stage and inspire others with her resilience and spirit.
