After the arrest five days ago of an alleged militant of the German Red Army Faction (RAF), a fugitive for three decades, the police have made two new arrests in Berlin, during the early hours of this Sunday, of people allegedly belonging to this far-left terrorist organization.

A spokesman for the Police of the German state of Lower Saxony, which was participating in the operation, confirmed that the two arrests had been made. Those arrested are Ernst-Volker Staub and Burkhard Garweg, as confirmed by the Berlin Police

Around 130 officers from the Lower Saxony State Criminal Police, the Berlin Police and the Federal Criminal Police have participated in the operation.

According to the newspaper Dei Zeit, during the arrests noises that sounded like gunshots were heard, although the use of firearms was not confirmed and it has been confirmed that there were no injuries.

The operation has focused on the interior and surroundings of a former commercial site on Markgrafendamm, on the corner of Persiusstrasse, in the Friedrichshain district of East Berlin. Inhabited trailers and caravans have been found there for a long time.

A few days ago, the authorities and the Federal Criminal Police published new mugshots of the two men. Furthermore, these arrests have been preceded by the arrest of RAF terrorist Daniela Klette, who was also in Berlin.

Burdock, Staub and Garweg belong to the so-called third generation of the Red Army Faction.
