Traffic congestion is one of the most important problems for the inhabitants of Barcelona and is positioned among the five major concerns of citizens, only surpassed by insecurity, cleanliness, access to housing and pollution, according to the data from the municipal services survey.

The growing concern about the problems generated by traffic congestion occurs despite the measures that the municipal government is applying due to the Urban Mobility Plan (PMU) approved by the City Council in 2020.

The plan establishes that, until 2024, less than 20% of trips in the city will be made by car. In this context, the bicycle must gain importance and the actions that the city council is taking, such as increasing the current network of bicycle lanes by 40%, go in that direction.

Measures such as the Superilles, the Glòries tunnel or the “tactical urbanism” that is being carried out in Barcelona have not put an end to the traffic problem. The number of cyclists has risen in recent years and with it the congestion of motors in some parts of the Catalan capital. 2024 is not that far away and making Barcelona a city with no traffic problems seems to require pedaling more and driving less.
