Before being a coach, Juan Carlos Unzué was a goalkeeper. He defended, among others, the goals of Sevilla CF and Club Atlético Osasuna. This Saturday the streets of the Seville capital, where the final of the Copa del Rey is being played between the rojillo team and Real Madrid, have received him with applause and chants in favor.
Unzué, who has become an activist for the rights of people suffering from ALS, has taken a walk in his wheelchair with his wife through Seville. There, as can be seen in a video broadcast by the journalist Jordi Évole, he has been received with praise.
“Unzué, Unzué, Unzué!”, has been shouted in some bars in Seville, reminiscent of the chants he received when he was under poles. Subsequently, dozens of people have broken into applause.
Some 25,000 Navarrese have moved to Seville this weekend to give their support to Osasuna. And Juan Carlos Unzué is one of them, since he was born in Pamplona 56 years ago. In addition to Osasuna and Seville, he also played for FC Barcelona, Tenerife and Real Oviedo.
His coaching period, in which he was second to Luis Enrique and first coach at Numancia, Celta and Girona, was interrupted by the diagnosis of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, the disease known as ALS, a neurodegenerative problem that has no cure. at present and with a life expectancy of between 3 and 5 years.
Since then, Unzué has become a defender of people who suffer from this disease, making visible the need for a law for it. “We have ALS and we want to continue enjoying life,” he commented this week in La Contra de La Vanguardia.
