Norovirus Outbreak Linked to Raw Oysters Sickens 80 in Los Angeles

An event celebrating the top restaurants in Los Angeles turned into a nightmare as at least 80 people fell ill with norovirus after consuming raw oysters, confirmed by the LA County’s Department of Public Health to ABC News on December 19, 2024, at 7:21 PM. The outbreak originated from an event at the Hollywood Palladium, where attendees were celebrating the Los Angeles Times’ list of the 101 best restaurants on December 3, according to the agency.

What is Norovirus?

Norovirus, commonly known as the “stomach flu” or the “stomach bug,” is an extremely contagious virus that leads to symptoms like vomiting, diarrhea, stomach pain, fever, headache, body aches, and dehydration, as per the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). It is the primary cause of foodborne illness in the United States. Prevention measures include proper handwashing, disinfecting surfaces, using hot water for laundry, and staying home when unwell.

The Recall and FDA Warning

The oysters responsible for the outbreak, Fanny Bay Select and Fanny Bay XS oysters from Pacific Northwest Shellfish Co., have been recalled after the pack date listed as November 25 or later. The recall notice was issued on December 13. Subsequently, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) warned restaurants, retailers, and consumers on December 18 not to sell or consume the contaminated oysters. The warning extended to 15 states, including Hawaii, California, Arizona, Illinois, Pennsylvania, and New York, with the outbreak traced back to British Columbia, Canada.

Investigation and Response

Santa Monica Seafood, the supplier of the oysters for the event, stated they are cooperating with the ongoing investigation into the outbreak. The company emphasized there is no evidence of mishandling in the supply chain, including by Santa Monica Seafood or the participating restaurants at the LA Times event. Tickets for the event ranged from $264 for general admission to over $600 for VIP access, raising concerns among attendees.

Despite the ongoing investigation, transparency and cooperation are key in ensuring the safety and well-being of all involved. The impact of such outbreaks extends beyond physical health, affecting individuals’ trust in the food industry and event organizations. As we navigate the aftermath of this incident, let us remember the importance of stringent food safety measures and swift responses in safeguarding public health. Let’s stay vigilant and informed to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
