National Weather Service cancels flash flood warning for Lincoln County

Updated at 3:50 p.m.: The flash flood warning has been canceled, per the National Weather Service. Ponding in fields and low-lying areas may continue.

Earlier: Parts of Lincoln County, including Canton and Beresford, are under a flash flood warning, according to the National Weather Service office in Sioux Falls.

The warning, which also includes Newton Hills State Park, is expected to last until 5:15 p.m.

“Doppler radar indicated thunderstorms producing heavy rain across the warned area,” the warning states. “Between 1.5 and 3 inches of rain have fallen. Flash flooding is ongoing or expected to begin shortly.”

That means flooding is expected with small creeks and streams, urban areas, highways, streets and underpasses as well as other poor drainage and low-lying areas, the warning continues.

“Turn around, don`t drown when encountering flooded roads,” the warning states. “Most flood deaths occur in vehicles.”

The warning is part of a system of storms moving east across the area, bringing at times lightning and brief heavy rainfall. A brief funnel and landspout is also possible, but the risk of those should end by Friday evening, the NWS stated.

More severe weather is possible Sunday afternoon, and “all modes of severe weather are possible,” according to the NWS.

“These afternoon storms may quickly become severe as they shift eastward out of central SD, with the potential for severe weather continuing into the evening hours,” the NWS states. “With all modes of severe weather possible, make sure you remain weather aware on Sunday!”
