The Chamber of Commerce and Industry of the southern Moroccan region of Souss-Massa (the largest exporting region of fruits and vegetables to the EU) denounced the attacks by European farmers on Moroccan horticultural products and asked Spain and France to protect the transit of their exports.
In a statement, the organization emphasizes that the transit of goods between Morocco and the European Union (EU) “is currently suffering serious disturbances” which it attributes to “illegal appeals by Spanish and French agricultural associations” against exports from the Maghreb country.
“These instigations led to protests and (traffic) closures that caused traffic jams at transit points, causing serious damage to Moroccan transport companies and seriously threatening trade relations between Morocco and the EU,” the statement reads. note.
The Moroccan Chamber of Commerce and Industry asks the Spanish and French authorities to “respect their contractual obligations” and “facilitate the circulation of goods” between both parties.
At the same time, the professional organization called for respect for international agreements related to the free movement of goods (the TIR convention and the ATP agreement).
The entity recalls that Morocco occupies third place on the list of the main EU exporters and insisted that Moroccan products “meet regulatory requirements and health safety conditions.”
Community farmers have been protesting for weeks against the EU’s agricultural policies, which they denounce as harsh, while accusing third countries, such as Morocco, of unfair competition. Within the framework of these protests, several trucks with Moroccan products were attacked.
