In the Valencian Community the percentage of Valencians who feel as Spanish as they are Valencian has increased, as has the percentage of those who feel only Valencian; and the number of those who only feel Spanish has been reduced. This is what the barometer of the Generalitat Valenciana says with 5,010 interviews carried out by Sigma Dos that was carried out between October 11 and December 5, 2022. A study that has been coordinated by Ana Berenguer, General Director of Analysis and Public Policies of the Valencian generalitat.
Specifically, 63.1% say they feel as Spanish as they are Valencian, compared to 57.7% who said so in 2015. In the case of those who feel only Valencian, this percentage has increased in that period from 7.4% at 8.1%. In the opposite case, there is a reduction from 30.5% to 21.2% of those who only feel Spanish.
However, there are significant differences according to the areas of the Valencian Community where the survey was carried out and which can be seen in the following table. Thus, for example, in the province of Valencia, 12.3% say they feel they are only Valencians, compared to 1.9% in the south of Alicante. It is also in South Alicante where the highest percentage of Valencians who feel only Spanish appears with 31%, a percentage that drops to 16.7% on the coast of the province of Valencia. The perception gathered in the south of Alicante is especially noteworthy, where in just one year the feeling of being only Spanish is reduced by half.
Another curious fact is the percentage of Valencians who feel “proud” of being so. The analysis focuses the response according to the partisan tendency of the respondent. Thus, more than 90% of those surveyed who say they vote for Compromís and the PSPV affirm so. This percentage is slightly reduced in the case of the PP and much more in the case of Vox. Curiously, the percentage of people who say they feel proud to be Valencian is lower in Castellón compared to Valencia and Alicante.
The barometer also shows broad support from Valencian society for economic and social development projects. If we talk about the Volkswagen gigafactory in Sagunt, 53.9% know about the project, while 75.1% give it a lot or a lot of importance. In second place are the infrastructures and technology in Health (known by 26.1% and important for 76.6% of the cases), followed by the Reactive Plan (65.5% important); the City of Light in Alicante; the Vega Renhace Plan and the industrial energy transformation in Castellón.
On the big political issues that have been on the front lines in recent years; The Valencian population strongly agrees (75%) with intensifying public support and investment in renewables as well as intensifying the use of water from treatment plants and desalination (65.4%).
A transversal support, in the case of renewables, since all people, regardless of the party they vote for, are in favor of implementing green energies. In 86.1% if they feel close to Compromís; 81% yes to United We Can; 78.6% if they feel close to the PSPV but also if they support the right, since they support 70.6% (PP); by 69.7% (Cs) and even far-right sympathizers believe that it is positive (57.3%).
