A total of 62 people have suffered food poisoning after attending a wedding in Piedrabuena (Ciudad Real). Everything indicates that the attendees could have gotten sick from eating spoiled food during the banquet, but the causes of the poisoning are still being investigated.

The General Directorate of Public Health has launched a protocol to find the origin of this food poisoning that has caused the admission of two people to the General Hospital of Ciudad Real, reports the EFE agency.

One of the information that remains to be confirmed is what pathogen or toxin has been responsible for making a large part of the attendees of the event sick. The corresponding detection and diagnostic techniques are being carried out.

The protocol includes taking samples from the people attending the wedding and from the place where the event was held, which was attended by 179 guests. Despite the fact that two affected have required hospital admission, they are evolving favorably.

Salmonella, one of the bacteria that causes the most poisoning at this time of year, could be to blame for this fatal outcome. The symptoms of poisoning caused by these microorganisms are fever, abdominal pain, diarrhea, nausea, and sometimes vomiting.

This bacterium can be present in all types of meat (although it is more common in poultry), in eggs, and in unwashed fruits and vegetables. Salmonellosis is not usually a life-threatening poisoning, but the symptoms can be more severe in the elderly, children under one year of age, and immunocompromised people.
