Yasmin Samatar, a health care worker, faced a challenging situation when her clothes got dirty while working with a patient. She needed to change, but as a Muslim who dresses modestly, she felt uncomfortable wearing pants. This experience led her and her colleague, Firaoli Adam, to start Mawadda LLC, a business that provides disposable hijabs for Muslim health care providers. The response to their product has been positive, with requests coming from around the world.
While launching the disposable hijabs, there was also a demand for modest scrub skirts. Samatar and Adam are now working on creating a line of modest scrubs that are both fashionable and functional. The current options for protective skirt scrubs are not easily accessible in hospitals, leading to challenges for health care workers who prefer skirts over pants. The upcoming line of modest scrubs will address these issues by offering a variety of options, including skirts, pants, and shirts that are both stylish and practical.
Rammy Mohammed, a designer working with Mawadda, is focusing on uniting fashion with function in the upcoming scrub line. The fabric used in the scrubs is a blend of polyester and spandex with antibacterial properties, making it durable and comfortable for health care workers. Mohammed’s designs include a skirt with a straighter cut to reduce noise and improve mobility in a hospital setting.
The goal of the modest scrub line is to provide Muslim health care workers with clothing options that align with their faith while also being fashionable and functional. The interest from health care providers, including those at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, has driven the success of Mawadda. By offering a range of modest scrubs, Mawadda aims to provide more options for health care workers who prefer to dress modestly.
