The expansion and comprehensive modernization works at the Santiago Bernabéu Metro station (Line 10) will begin next Monday, the 19th, as announced by the regional government.
The works were awarded at the end of the year for an amount of more than 66 million euros and an expected execution period of 38 months, with the expectation that they will be completed in the first quarter of 2027.
Once completed, the space will triple, going from the current 4,843 square meters to 12,481, and accessibility will also be improved with the installation of 12 new elevators and 24 escalators.
The objective of resizing this stop is “to more effectively accommodate the influx of people, especially high on match days, and which will foreseeably increase after the remodeling that will turn the Santiago Bernabéu stadium into a benchmark in the organization of cultural events, leisure and entertainment in the capital and throughout Europe,” according to the regional government.
Specifically, in 2023, the Santiago Bernabéu station counted more than 4.3 million entries, exceeding 25,000 users on matchdays, and this influx is expected to increase with the expansion.
This stop on the Madrid underground has a close relationship with the Real Madrid football club field since its origins. It was inaugurated in 1982 under the name of Lima although in 1998 it was redesignated as Santiago Bernabéu. Thus, the actions planned to be carried out in the coming months also include a new design of the interior space that reflects this symbiosis between the station and the sports venue.
The project, which is scheduled to be completed by 2027, contemplates the creation of a large space, from which the intermediate levels and the platforms themselves can be seen, which will have two lobbies. The first will be reached through a new access located near the football stadium. In addition, a gallery will be built in the southern area that will connect the second lobby with the current entrances to Plaza de Lima (Castellana pares and Azca).
It also includes 12 elevators to improve accessibility and twenty escalators that will connect these two lobbies with the intermediate level and the platforms, and which will be added to the eight existing on the route to the platform from the Castellana odd north access.
In addition, the architectural finishes and infrastructure of the station will be modernized, and all the technology of Station 4.0 will be located, with new entrance turnstiles and state-of-the-art transportation ticket vending machines.
Furthermore, the new design will make it possible to respond more effectively to the influx of travelers, which is especially high on match days, and which is expected to increase after the remodeling. Last year, more than 2.3 million travelers were counted at the stop, with a daily average of 10,500 users.
These works will be coordinated with the urbanization work that Real Madrid will undertake in the area around Plaza de Lima, the parking lot, the new Castellana bike lane and the rest of the pre-existing services.
Likewise, it is part of an area in the process of great transformation of the city of Madrid, where in addition to the renovation of the stadium itself, the comprehensive revitalization of Azca, the works on the axis of Avenida del General Perón and Concha Espina are being processed. , and the remodeling and commissioning of the Castellana Conference Center.
